‘Once Upon a Lockdown’, a new and exciting children’s storybook packed with imagination and beautiful illustrations from local children throughout the Mourne region will be hitting shelves in MADE in Mourne in the coming weeks.
Located on Greencastle Street in Kilkeel, MADE in Mourne is a Social Enterprise which encourages entrepreneurship and creativity, providing the community and local businesses with a unique and inviting space to grow their business, learn new skills and collaborate with inspiring and talented individuals.
MADE in Mourne wanted to find a way to encourage local children to embrace their inner artist whilst they spent time at home. The idea was simple, create a piece of original art, anything at all and it would be paired with a short story and sent back to the artist on a postcard. This story would be a unique keepsake and bite-sized bedtime story to enjoy. Local children took the incentive and delivered some of the most beautiful and dazzling pictures and paintings.
Behind the imagination and creativity, were Alicia Newell and Wendy Graham Hanna, two very talented writers from the team in MADE in Mourne. Both residing in Kilkeel, Alicia Newell is a retired theatre nurse and is much happier with a pen, or a baking whisk in her hand instead of a scalpel. Alicia would like to dedicate her stories to Danielle, who flies with her own wings. While Wendy Graham Hanna is a Mum of four, who often finds herself somewhere between the pen and the page, pursuing her passion for poetry. Wendy would like to dedicate her stories to her Mum, whose quotes, rhymes and proverbs have been her inspiration.
Amazed by the number of illustrations submitted, Alicia commented, “We were blown away with the artwork and felt very privileged to team our words with their little masterpieces. Art is a great podium for children to discover their creativity, no pressure, no theme, just whatever flowed from those little hands. As the stories multiplied so did the enthusiasm and support. Tiny piece by tiny piece, a book formed! We hope you enjoy it.”
A special mention must also be given to the cover artist, 10 year old Harley Houston from Kilkeel, a very talented young artist who designed and illustrated the front cover with his wonderful imagination. Harvey commented, “I have been drawing from a young age and started by drawing farms. I take inspiration from the artists Vexx and Jon Burgerman and one day, I would love to be an illustrator and a footballer!”
